SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide in the Szeto–Schiller peptide family, with alternating aromatic and positively charged amino-acid residues. It is studied for interactions with cardiolipin, a phospholipid found in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin participates in the organization of mitochondrial membranes and their associated proteins.

Primary research has examined SS-31 in cardiolipin-containing model membranes and isolated mitochondrial preparations. These experiments investigate interactions between cardiolipin and cytochrome c, electron-transfer reactions, oxygen consumption and ATP synthesis.
