MT-2, also known as Melanotan II, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). Its constrained peptide structure is studied in relation to melanocortin receptor binding and activation, rather than as a selective probe for a single receptor subtype.
Primary research has examined MT-2 in receptor-binding and cellular-signalling assays, including measurements of cyclic AMP (cAMP) responses at the MC1 melanocortin receptor. Comparative studies of cyclic melanocortin analogues investigate how changes in peptide structure affect receptor affinity and subtype selectivity. This research provides a context for studying melanocortin signalling and pigmentation-related cellular pathways.
