MOTS-C is a mitochondrial-derived peptide consisting of 16 amino acids. Its name refers to a mitochondrial open reading frame within the 12S ribosomal RNA region of mitochondrial DNA. It is studied as a signalling peptide that connects mitochondrial biology with cellular metabolic regulation.
Primary research has examined MOTS-C in cell and animal models, including its relationship with folate and purine metabolism and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signalling. Further cell-based studies have investigated its movement into the nucleus during metabolic stress and its involvement in regulating stress-responsive gene expression. These studies explore mitochondrial-to-nuclear communication and cellular adaptation.
