Epithalon, also referred to as Epitalon in research literature, is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the amino acid sequence alanine–glutamate–aspartate–glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, or AEDG). It is studied in experimental systems concerned with cellular regulation and telomere biology.
Primary cell-culture studies have investigated Epithalon in relation to telomerase expression and activity, telomere length and the replicative behaviour of fibroblasts. Telomeres are structures at chromosome ends, while telomerase is an enzyme involved in maintaining their repeated DNA sequences. These studies examine cellular mechanisms under laboratory conditions.
